Large Ontology Visualization

Bibliography

Here is a very small bibliography on tree and ontology visualization. This bibliography can be used both for the IREC evaluation and for the second year master internship. The two papers that are dedicated, the former, to the evaluation of tree visualization techniques, the latter to ontology visualization. They are seeds to a further investigation on theses two topics, more precisely to the evaluation of ontology visualization with Memory Islands.

Internship Subject

This Internship Subject can be chosen either by Erasmus Mundus DMKM master students or by IAD master students.

With the concept of Memory Islands, the ACASA team propose a new tree visualization approach that is based on cartography, i.e. on a spatialization of abstract data structures, mainly trees. The hypothesis on which the notion Memory Island is based is that the spatialization helps to memorize contents. This notion of Memory Island is applied to ontology visualization (click here for an example), which could help to access to many online documents. The purpose of this internship is twofold. On the one hand, it is to compare Memory Islands to other tree visualization approaches and, more precisely, to other ontology visualization approaches. The question is about the application of the methodological tools developed in the above mentioned papers to the psychological evaluation of visualization with Memory Islands. On the other hand, we want to use the Memory Islands to very large ontology visualization: the purpose is to evaluate the practical complexity of the Memory Island building algorithm and to approach the practical limit of the size of ontologies that can be visualized with Memory Islands.

Remark: there might be a scholarship for a PhD student on the application of Memory Islands to large ontology visualization
