OBJECTIVE OF THE SART PROJECT

The objective of the SART project is to design and develop a system to support an operator in trafic control in subway when an incident occurs. Since 1995, more than 50 persons work (or worked) in this project at the University Paris 6, RATP (the subway company in Paris, France), the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, and Metrô (the subway company in Rio de Janeiro, Brasil). The SART project is the object of two national agrements and one international agreement between the partners in the project.

SART is developed along a multi-agent approach. This permits to introduce progressively the agents according to specific needs. SART is composed now of three agents: a line configurator, a traffic simulator and an incident manager. The line configurator helps the operator to build a model of a given line. The traffic simulator gives the behavior of trains in a given situation on the line. The incident manager manages recorded incidents to support the operator in an incident solving. Each agent has been developed independently of the others. We then will start the design of a fourth agent: the communication agent. The role of the communication agent is to manage interaction between the operator and the agents in the one hand, and among the software agents themselves in the other hand. This type of architecture of SART avoids the operator to face different agents, each with its specific language, and permits to deal with complex questions in which several agents intervene to build the answer.

The notion of context plays an important role in this project because the strategy used to solve a given incident depends essentially on the context in which the incident occurs. For example, a problem of train traction will be solved differently during peak hours or non peak hours.
